Kathryn Szoka is a free-lance and fine art photographer, known for her Vanishing Landscapes © series, which chronicles the changing East End landscape. An ardent naturalist, Szoka photographs C.S.A. farms and private gardens through the seasons for clients. Her publications include Sag Harbor Is: A Literary Celebration and The Quail Hill Farm Cookbook. Other photograph essays include Life Along the Turnpike: Bridgehampton Today and Black & Green: Contemporary Life in a Coal Patch. Szoka is co-owner of Canio’s Books, Sag Harbor.

Beautiful photography! I especially love the photo of the doves–exquisite! I am a published writer and photographer, but also open to learning from others and you, Kathy, are always an inspiration! Canio’s is a special place for me to go and “disappear” for an hour or so. Nostalgic but preserved, and especially stocked full of amazing old books, is how I would describe Canio’s.
The cozy book stores from my day are slowly vanishing and that just can’t happen! Nowadays I make it a point to shop in (and BUY) as many ‘mom-and-pop’ stores I find on Long Island..
Nothing is more inviting than a book store with that musty book smell and the maze of bookshelves and bins everywhere you turn. I love that Canio’s makes the atmosphere even cozier with the big comfy chairs to plop into whilst looking through an armful of Canio’s books!!
On another note: Is anyone aware of any ongoing local photo contests? I’d love to enter a few this year. Anyway, thanks for Canio’s; your book store feels like home away from home! ❤
